Despite the fact that Assplosion had already secured the playing rights of Jason Campbell for 2007, the team was active again today, acquiring Matt Leinart from the Terriers in exchange for their 16th pick in the expansion draft.
"We were looking to go QB with either are 16th or 17th pick in the draft, as Jason Campbell was viewed as more of a long term project. The fact that we were able to land Leinart, a guy that we had in our top 5 most wanted QB's, was simply too big of a player to pass up." said GM Brad Hunt during a press conference."
"We're not entirely sure what's going to happen with Jason. Obviously, due to league rules, we cannot keep both of them for next season. We're currently considering trade offers for him, but Matt is definitely our guy. The goal coming in to this season was to try and pick up a talented young quarterback with a promising future as well as a top tier running back and good young wide receiver. Obviously, we've been able to exceed these goals, bringing in the two excellent backs this year."
Leinart, a rookie last season for the Arizona Cardinals, passed for 2547 yards and 11 TD's with 12 interceptions.
"With this move, we've sacrificed a bit of bench depth for next season, but we feel that its worth it in order to meet the long term goals of this franchise. Our goal is to win a championship in 3 years time."
